Desmos + Smarter Balanced

Desmos calculators will be available on Smarter Balanced tests in the 2017-18 school year. Some states will also transition to using Desmos calculators this current 2016-17 school year.

Desmos now offers 3 calculators for the Smarter Balanced assessments:

All the Desmos calculators are free to use.

Please note that students may not have access to a calculator for every mathematics assessment item presented on the Smarter Balanced Assessments.

How the Calculators Differ

The calculators found on www.desmos.com differ slightly from those students will encounter on their practice and live assessments. It’s important to note the differences:

Graphing Calculator Scientific Calculator Four-Function Calculator

Additional Practice

In addition to visiting desmos.com/calculator, high school students can also download the Desmos Graphing Calculator on the iOS or Android app stores for free. Once downloaded, students can use these apps without an internet connection.

11th grade students can find Graphing Calculator tutorials at learn.desmos.com and can read the Desmos User Guide (English) to learn more about the Graphing Calculator’s functionality. The Desmos User Guide is also available in Spanish and 16 other languages.

Accessibility

Desmos is committed to helping every student love learning math. We are proud to say that Desmos is fully WCAG 2.0 AA compliant. The accessibility improvements we’ve made ensure students who are blind or visually impaired have the same opportunities as their peers to discover the joy of learning math. Please read more about this at www.desmos.com/accessibility.

A complete checklist of the 3 calculators against the WCAG 2.0 standards can be found at this link . Please send any questions or feedback to accessibility@desmos.com.

Privacy

During test administrations, Desmos will not receive any data about students. Vendors will host the Desmos technology directly on their servers and will not exchange any data with Desmos's servers. Furthermore, students do not need to sign in or provide any personal information about themselves to be able to practice with Desmos calculators before the test.

Additional rules apply for data privacy when dealing with children under 13. The Four-Function and Scientific calculators, which will be used by students under the age of 13, never request student data as there is no way to log in.

While practicing for the test, some 11th grade students using desmos.com/calculator may choose to create accounts to be able to save work for a later time. We encourage everyone to review the Desmos Privacy Policy which describes what information we collect from these users who are over the age of 13 and what we do with that information.
